Abstract

Feminism is an approach to see, analyze and interpret text and world from female perspective. Punjab has been the land of diverse cultures and world views. In ancient times the society was maternal, which was transformed into paternal one by the Aryan invaders in a long series of wars and settlements. Despite this transformation and assimilation of Aryan world view, the Punjabi sensibility has strong imprints of maternal society. The folk tales and classical Punjabi poetry, surprisingly present the maternal point of view strongly. This article explores the themes of feminism in classical poetry and strong female characters of folktales in Punjabi.
