A Forgotten Urdu Chronogramist: Abdul Ghafoor Nasakh
Keywords
The nineteenth century is important not only in terms of Urdu literature but also in terms of chronogramisms. In this era, literature and chronogramisms were flourishing in both South India and North India. But in northern India, the Urdu language in particular was exploiting its creative potential. In the nineteenth century, this art had gained considerable popularity. The popularity of this art in northern India can be gauged from the fact that a person, who does not have the power to create chronogram, was not considered a poet. In view of this popularity of chronogramms, in other areas also some personalities were born who were in no way inferior to the representative chronogram's creator poets of North India. One of them is the name of Nassakh. Nasakh has created hundreds of chronogramms in Urdu, Persian and Arabic. Nassakh had a special ability to create chronogramms. Chronogramms are not only included in his Diwan but some books only contain chronograms also. This article gives you a brief overview on Nassakh's ability of chronogrammism.
