Abstract

Interest in linguistics has risen phenomenally in the last few years. With increasing frequency linguistics is now intruding even in discussions of literature. This results in increasing curiosity about linguistics and its place. The most pressing questions bear on the relations of linguistics to the more traditional formulations of the subject matter. These questions are too central and too complex to be treated so lightly. There is, certainly a need for article that will go beyond what we have in interpreting linguistics to the Urdu scholars and in bringing it to bear on the questions met in their studies. Since very ancient times, men have been interested in their language. As language has excited their curiosity it is necessary that to understand themselves they have seen that they must first understand language. At the same time it is recognized that pragmatic value of the ability to manipulate it well. Works that deal in various ways with language are known from most of the ancient civilizations. By the 1930 s several well sub disciplines had developed within linguistics. We traced the development of three of them, 1. The oldest and still dominant branch was historical linguistics or comparative linguistics, largely discussing Indo European language family. 2. Much younger branch known as dialect geography linguistics. This had established its own identity but it was mostly over shadowed by its older sister. 3. Descriptive linguistics, this had originated mostly independently. Its antecedents were different in every country and development shows clear evidence of this. Little changes of ideas had taken place in phoneme, Urdu language is now being introduced as official language in Pakistan, In this regard I think our duty toward Urdu linguistics is increased manifold. We should develop better and modern methods of linguistics to increase its circle and we should take concrete steps to improve the standard of Urdu language .These goals can only be achieved if we study the structure of linguistics minutely. I hope this article will provide initial step in this regard.
