Abstract
'Kafan' is one of the most famous short stories of Urdu. This short story is mostly interpreted in the light of realism of Munshi Prem Chand. Its famous characters Gesu and Madhu are often discussed as the real appearance of the Hindustani Society of earlier period of twentieth century. This celebrated understanding has been challenged in this article. It has been tried to incite the readers of Munshi Prem Chand through this paper to look back over his short stories without the nomenclature of unyielding realism.
