Abstract

Syed Abdul Hameed Adam (1910-1981) was one of the famous Urdu ghazal poets. Adam hailed from Gujranwala and was brought up in Lahore. He was a student of 9th class when his father Syed Haider Ali died of overdrinking. After passing matriculation examination, Adam started his job in military accounts as a clerk and at the same time he started composing his poetry. Poetry of Adam covers many topics but womanly beauty and wine  are his favourite areas. Adam successfully promoted Urdu ghazal in the times when popularity of Urdu poem was on a rise. Adam's health deteriorated rapidly towards the end of his life because of excessive drinking. This article is an attempt to show some salient features of Adam's poetry and share some important information about his life.  This article concludes that Abdul Hameed Adam was an important poet in the tradition of Urdu ghazal and his contributions as a poet are valuable.
