Abstract
John B. Gilchrist was very important grammarian of Urdu language in the late 18th century. He, after arrival in India, learnt Urdu and other vernacular languages here. He compiled English to Urdu dictionary and Urdu (Hindoostanee) grammar to preserve the grammatical rules and vocabulary of Urdu language from common and literary circles. The history of this language discussed it just an important work formally. It was not just the compilation of works of Urdu language. Gilchrist set a plan to discover and built the structure of language of command for the upcoming colonial rule of East India Company of England. He set the three degrees of Urdu language with examples to rule on the natives of India. The pattern of "language of command" by Bernard S.Cohn is also discussed in this article to strengthen the said thesis. The language of command plan can also be derived from the books published under the title of "Hindoostanee Philology" by John Gilchrist.
