Abstract

Nasir Kazmi (1925-1972), a renowned poet of Modern Urdu Ghazal, mentioned in his last interview that his poetry was not something romantic but a symbol of growth. This statement opened new horizons for the study of Nasir's poetry but sadly the truth is that most of Nasir's critics have been elaborating his work in only one direction that was either nostalgic or romantic. They hardly made an effort to explore his poetry apart from migration and memories linked to it. No doubt, Nasir suffered from dejection but he didn't take much time to accept that move of history as a fact. So, while studying his poetry critically, we didn't find Nasir's sadness all about his past memories, rather it is more relevant to the socio-political scenario of his time. In Nasir's poetry, sadness is a metaphor of poverty, helplessness, ignorance, anxiousness and protest rather than remembrance and loneliness. In fact, his lonely feelings are also attached to the same state of mind mentioned over as sadness. In this article, efforts have been made to analyze and interpret/explain Nasir's poetry in his socio-political context and to make his critics think what if Nasir Kazmi didn't belong to his contemporary famous ideological group of progressive writers, his poetry has its own ideology belongs to a dialectical phenomena mentioned by the poet as 'growth'.
