Abstract

Qamar Jalalvi[1887-1968]is best known for his Ghazals and unique subjects in Urdu Poetry. His pen name "Qamar Jalalvi" overshadowed his real name Syed Muhammad Hussain Abidi. Though a traditionalist poet, he added depth and uniqueness in various aspects of Urdu Poetry such as Ghazal, Ruba'i and Marsiyah. He was not a student or disciple of any particular poet, yet he was inspired by Ameer Minaai and used to regard him as his spiritual mentor. Ustaad Qamar Jalalvi, himself, was known among his contemporary poets as "Ustaad" (teacher). He had numerous students and followers in his literary and poetic circles. In this article the researcher has highlighted various turns and twists of his life but focused upon the worth and merit of his poetic contribution. His humble socioeconomic status and poor source of earning enhanced the circle of his sympathizers. Mr. Z.A. Bukhari introduced him to the public of Pakistan through Radio Pakistan. Ustaad achieved great fame in Indo-Pak subcontinent the field of "Ghazal" and was awarded a lifelong monthly scholarship from government of Pakistan as a token of appreciation for his literary services. In this article, four of his poetic collections have been discussed including "Gham-e-Javedaa'n, Aqeedat-e-Javedaa'n, Auj-e-Qamar and Rashk-e-Qamar. In fact traditional poetry always needs to be revisited to re assess its worth and charm.
