Abstract

National language of Pakistan is also frequently used as a Lingua Franca throughout Pakistan. It is used as a medium of instruction from nursery to Ph.D. level for the teaching of various subjects at different institutions. In Punjab, it is being taught as a compulsory subject from nursery class to intermediate level in public institutions. However, strange hypocritical behaviour is being observed for the teaching of Urdu compulsory. It is a universal truth that each normal student often learns the primary skills ''Listening & Speaking'' of  his/her mother tongue e.g; Punjabi, Seraiki, Pothohari, Hindko, Mewati and Rohtaki etc. for communication purposes before seeking his/her admission in a formal school. There, they are directly taught the secondary skills "Reading & Writing" of Urdu language and primary skills are generally ignored. In this way, they cannot get full command over four skills of Urdu and consequently show a lingual deficiency. In this article, both parts of text book of Urdu compulsory for intermediate classes are analyzed and criticized in the perspective of its prose and verse contents. It has tried to establish the point that the content does not meet the social, cultural and lingual requirements of the students. It has been proposed that it should be revised keeping in view the culture and social requirements of the taught.
