Abstract

Nationhood is an intricate, complex and multilayered notion. To define the concept of nationhood, one must answer many other relevant questions. Nation is an organic entity having various constituents. These may include historical and cultural traditions, geographical and ecological similarities, racial identity and ideological likeness. In this respect, if we analyze the constituting elements of the concept of nationhood in Pakistan, we have to admit the ambiguity of a number of ideologies and their connotations. Pakistani nation is unique in the sense that it has chosen its identity in the context of a multi-ethnic society consciously and willfully. For the purpose, it has decided to be and remain one despite the racial, linguistic and cultural differences. This goal can be achieved only if a common language is adopted as a national language which can be a means of communication among all groups within a nation. Yet this issue is not so simple and easy to be solved. The role of the mother tongue in relation to the national language is something to be addressed seriously and sincerely. In a geographic territory, having more than one linguistic group, the concept of a common language is a must to survive as a nation in the global community.
