Abstract

Khamriat is an Arabic word that refers to wine poetry or poetry about any other form of intoxication. The tradition of Urdu Khamriat is as old as the Urdu poetry itself is. Quli Qutub Shah is considered to be first Sahib e Diwan poet in Urdu. His diwan/Kuliyat is first presentation of Khamriat at a large scale in Urdu. Quli Qutub Shah translated Persian Ghazals of Khawja Hafiz Sherazi into Dakani Urdu. He himself wrote many verses about wine and intoxication of beauty. Before Quli Qutub Shah , Urdu wine poetry had scores of poets but their poetry could not be saved properly in their times. Syed Mahmood , Feroz Shah Bahmani & Mushtaq were great poets of wine poetry in our Urdu tradition before Quli Qutub Shah. Wali of Deccan is famous for his wine poetry but there were many wine poets between Quli Qutub Shah and Wali Dakani. This article reviews  the Urdu tradition of Wine poetry from the beginning to Deccan and then from Sheikh Zahoor ud Din Hatim to Mirza Asadullah Khan Ghalib, Mirza Khan Dagh Dehelvi and Ameer Ahmad Ameer Meenai. In the next phase this article discusses the wine poetry of Syed Riaz Ahmad  Khairabadi in the light of said tradition. This article concludes that Riaz Khairabadi was a unique poetry of this Khamriat traditon in Urdu. Riaz himself was a non-drinker but on the basis of his poetry, he becomes a great name in this tradition. He promoted the tradition of Khamriat in the times when Urdu poems were being promoted.
