Abstract

Syed Khalil Ahmad Mazāq Dehlvi, about three years after the creation of Pakistan, unexpectedly travelled from Delhi to Dera Ghazi Khan in the last years of the decade of 1950. After arriving in Dera Ghazi Khan, he laid the foundation of humorous and satirical poetry there, and thus gained distinction and prominence by achieving primacy in this genre. Through his humorous poetry, he left very deep and lasting impressions.

A large portion of his early and middle-period work was lost due to lack of preservation and fell victim to the turmoil, chaos, and disturbances during the time of the Partition of Pakistan. Despite best efforts, only three concise handwritten notebooks of his humorous poetry have been recovered, which belong to the period of his stay in Dera Ghazi Khan and Jampur.

With Mazāq Dehlvi’s migration to Dera Ghazi Khan, the barrenness of humorous poetry in the region was effectively brought to an end. The unique figure of his era, Mazāq Dehlvi, used to compose independent humorous and satirical couplets extempore in Dera Ghazi Khan, and would receive abundant appreciation from the local people.
