Abstract
Gabriel Garcia Marquez is one of the most read writers in the world. His novel ‘Memoria de mis putastristas’ was originally published in Spanish in 2004, with an English translation titled as ‘Memories of My Melancholy Whores’. This novel was also translated in Urdu by Muhammad Umer Memon. This study chooses the English work and its Urdu translation for ‘Contrastive Research’ theory by Andre Lefevere. This study analyses the difference between the theory and poetics of the two and the impact of social ideology on that. The understanding about the characters of the novel creates a language difference between the two versions. An analysis of the two versions in the light of the theory of rewriting provides a completely new approach to the study of translation of the novel. Translation studies are no longer confined to the linguistic level, but to the macro level such as culture and society.
