Abstract

Ghazal is a popular genre of not only of Urdu and Persian poetry but also has its musical and melodious effect. In this paper an attempt has been made to measure statistically the popularity of various Urdu poetic rhythms i.e metres. It has been discovered that in a corpus of five hundred sung Urdu ghazals, a total of forty metres have been used. Out of these forty metres, only four metres were found to cover more than half of the corpus. These observations are compared with classical Urdu poetry and analysed using several classifications. An attempt is also made to find linkages between Urdu poetic and musical rhythms.
