Abstract

With the advent of East India Company's officers, there came lower staff from U.P, Bihar and Bengal for facilitation of governance in Lahore. They were East India Company's well trained Urdu speaking people. Company's officers also spoke Urdu and for their own convenience they become patrons of Urdu in place of Persian and Punjabi. Urdu was made the language of judiciary and district level government and from there onwards Urdu prose started evolving. Urdu being the vernacular language in colonial era, for the first time it was used for official, governmental and judicial matters. Consequently, summons, letters, judicial orders, translations and explanation of books on law were released in Urdu. Thus "Sarkari Akhbar" (1858), "Gunja-e-Shaigan" (1860), "Aanwar-u-Shamas" (1867) and "Aataleeq-e-Punjab" (1869) promoted official and judicial prose with regard to subject and style.
