The present study is concerned with the methodological and philosophical problems in the documentation of history of literature. It aims to distinguish between historiography and historical developmental approach. Historiography is a systematic record of different events and here historian is more interested in the past for the sake of past, where as in the historical developmental approach past is interpreted in the light of present or future. It also takes into account the social, economic and political conditions of an era and how it is affecting the present.
