Abstract

Existentialism became prominent especially after World War I and II. In the sub-continent, the political, social and historical conditions during the age of Ghalib were almost are same and those when existentialism was becoming a strong philosophical movement in Europe. Since Ghalib was a mature and sensitive artist and he had a vision of the future, it should be no surprise that his poetry contains elements of existentialism. In fact, the recognition of the elements of existentialism in the poetry of Ghalib may help in the proper understanding of the philosophy of existentialism itself. Ghalib's verses provide an effective, poetic interpretation of the complex philosophy of existentialism.
