Abstract

Western influence on Urdu literature is manifold. Not only modern Urdu Criticism is heavily influenced by western thought and western critical tradition but historiography and Tazkiraz (old forms of Urdu criticism) also came under influence of said influence. The question of the validity of the critical significance of Tazkiraz was first raised by Garcein Dettasi, a French orientalist. Whole following discourse on Tazkiraz revolves around the points raised by Dettasi, sometimes in agreement and at times in defiance. This discourse is in spirit colonial: ignores or represses the system of cultural values, Tazkiras were feeding upon for centuries. This article examines the repercussions of colonial discourse on Tazkiras and seeks to establish that Tazkiras are manifestation of Eastern Poetics, constituted by classical Arabic, Persian and Sanskrit critical systems.
