Abstract

Extreme forms of religious revivalism and activism has, through out the world, not only held the interest of intellectuals but is also in the forefront of contemporary public consciousness and concern. Among the Muslim states, Pakistan is one such country where religious revivalism and extremism is growing at a high scale. As a result, the image of the country has received a big blow and its citizens all over the world are increasingly being viewed with suspicion and distrust. After 9/11 and 7/7 especially, Pakistan has been facing severe criticism for sheltering religious extremists. The role of Madrassas (seminaries) is also being questioned in this connection by the West. Religious extremism in Pakistan moreover, has also led to sectarian confrontations, internal destabilization and serious security concerns. This paper attempts to study the evolution and development of the phenomenon of religious revivalism in Pakistan in the backdrop of the country being divided along sectarian, anti-democratic and anti-secular lines. It also demystifies the process of religious frenzy which seeks to provoke repressive reactions while making the country a centre of gravity for extremist/revivalist forces all over the world.
