Abstract

Formal criticism proposed that a work of literary art should be regarded as autonomous and should not be judged by reference to considerations beyond itself. The article places special emphasis on the formal elements of the literary text as well as methodology of formal criticism. The article also attempts to point out the limitations of formalist approach.
